Technical Committee Finding #1

Head Intake/Rudder Bearing Through-Hulls

April 12, 2021

BACKGROUND:

The Class has recently been made aware that certain boats manufactured by Fibre Mechanics (FM) do not have the same degree of fairing around the head intake and lower rudder bearing as boats manufactured by Westerly Marine (WM). This discrepancy was corrected in the relevant NYYC charter boats (see Addendum photos attached 9A through 9D).

The Technical Committee has determined that the following modifications are permitted solely with respect to FM boats shipped prior to May 31, 2021to correct this issue:

(1) The head intake through-hull fitting may be faired and painted. Fairing shall remain within a 200mm radius from the intake hole center and the intake hole shall remain the size of the ID of the through hull fitting. Approval from the Class Measurer is required.

(2) The rudder bearing hull fairing plate may be made flush with the hull. Up to four fasteners are permitted. The perimeter of the plate and the screw heads may be filled with removable caulk to allow for easy removal of the fairing plate. The plate may be painted to match the hull finish.

(3) Prior to commencing the work described in (1) and (2) Appendix 7 of the IC37 Class Rules, Boat Repair Approval, must be completed and submitted, and the facility performing such work must be approved by the IC37 Class. In addition, photos must be taken at each stage of the repair and submitted to the Class for final approval.
